What the Letter Edge system is

Letter Edge is our name for a sign construction that uses inserted acrylic letters in an HDU design. The acrylic is the letter material, including its visible edges. This gives the lettering a different appearance from a raised HDU letter whose sides and face receive paint. If the edge appearance is important to your design, ask for Letter Edge specifically when you request the quote.

The name describes a construction choice, not a separate foam density or a generic promise about every acrylic sign. An acrylic logo supplied loose, an acrylic face applied to a letter and an inserted acrylic letter are different arrangements. The quote and production proof should identify the one being made.

Acrylic letters and painted HDU letters

Painted HDU lets the letter shape, relief and coating work together as part of the sign. Acrylic contributes its own face and edge appearance. In an inserted-letter design, the fit between the acrylic and the HDU must be planned along with the visible projection. The finished look depends on the letter color, thickness, spacing and surrounding background.

Tell us whether you are trying to match an existing acrylic sign or simply like the clean letter edges. A close photograph helps communicate that preference. We can review the design before choosing a construction, rather than assuming that every letter on a reference image is made the same way.

The details to approve before cutting

The proof should show the wording, font, overall layout and finished sign size. The construction notes should also identify the acrylic color and thickness, insertion depth or arrangement, visible projection and the HDU background treatment. These are part of the specification even when they are hard to judge in a flat digital proof.

Small dots, fine script strokes, inside corners and narrow gaps need particular attention. They affect how individual pieces are cut, fitted, handled and packed. A design that looks attractive at full screen size may have very small physical parts when reduced to the actual sign dimensions. Send the intended size with the artwork so we can review both together.

Background, border and color decisions

The HDU background can be smooth or textured according to the approved scope. A dark field and light lettering create one visual effect; matching colors create another. Texture, raised borders and secondary copy need enough space that they do not crowd the acrylic letters. We can use your brand colors or review a reference palette.

Specify the exact color information you have, including a Sherwin-Williams code for painted parts where appropriate. A screen image is useful for discussing the direction, but it is not a dependable physical color sample. Acrylic colors and painted background colors should be identified separately in the order.

Plan for the installation location

Tell us whether the sign will be used indoors or outdoors, and whether it will attach to a wall, posts, a hanging bracket or a monument. Acrylic selection, dimensions and attachment must suit the actual application. The presence of acrylic letters does not make the HDU panel a structural frame or remove the need for a suitable mounting plan.

For a replacement sign, include photographs and measured openings. For a new sign, include the intended finished dimensions and the installer’s requirements. Any backing, bracket or pattern needed from us should be named in the quote. Installation remains with the buyer or local sign professional unless a separate arrangement is confirmed.

These options are not interchangeable descriptions of the same product. Comparing them in the quote prevents a buyer from expecting acrylic edges on a painted HDU letter or expecting a fitted sign assembly when only loose parts were ordered.
